(EN) European bison

(Bison bonasus)

In 1923, the world’s first studbook for an endangered species was established in Europe. It is largely thanks to German zoo directors that the last 12 animals of this largest European wild animal were saved from extinction. Through decades of co-ordinated breeding in human care, one of the greatest successes of species conservation has been achieved. Today, around 8000 bison live in Europe, of which around 3000 are in the wild.
