(EN) California condor

(Gymnogyps califonianus)

At the beginning of the 1980s, there were only 22 of these proud birds left. It was decided to capture these remaining animals and hand them over to the zoos in San Diego and Los Angeles for care and breeding. To increase the breeding rate, the clutches were taken away from the animals to stimulate them to lay again. The young were arduously raised by the zookeepers. For example, in order to feed them without them becoming habituated to humans, the zookeepers dressed parts of their arms up whilst feeding. More than 200 California condors are now living in the wild again.
