(EN) Arabian oryx

(Oryx leucoryx)

In 1972, the Arabian oryx was considered extinct in the wild. As early as 1963, 3 animals of this charismatic antelope species were successfully captured in co-operation with the WWF. Together with 2 other animals from the zoo in London, the so-called „world herd“ was then set up at the zoo in Phoenix (Arizona). This breeding programme, in which numerous zoological institutions soon became involved, was able to return animals to the wild in 1978. Around 1200 animals were living there again in 2016.
